SEND Futures Experiences Report
Our final report should be read alongside the October 2023 CQC/Ofsted inspection which can be found here: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/44/80513
Healthwatch Richmond collected experiences from over 100 parent carers whose children have SEND, and also from 20+ professionals who work and support children with SEND in the borough. This was done to understand and inform improvements to services in Richmond.
In particular we focused on 6 key areas:
- SEND identification and assessment,
- Parent carer involvement in decision making about their child,
- Perception of help and support received,
- Preparedness for changes in education and life,
- Involvement wider community activities, and
- Quality of support information.
Data Collection
Data from parent carers and professionals was collected through online surveys consisting of structured and open-ended questions. The surveys were created in partnership with Achieving for Children Richmond and parent carers.
Findings
While recognising successes and positive outcomes, the report highlights the systemic challenges that have been experienced by service users, parent carers and professionals. These include:
- A lack of clear communication between services and parents
- Inaccessible information regarding services and legal processes
- Issues with the completion, accuracy and updating of Education, Health and Care Plans
- Difficulties in accessing holistic support for children and their families
The report underscores the importance of professionals receiving necessary training, individualised support, and collaborative practices. Additionally, the report emphasises the significance of recognising and celebrating the unique abilities of individuals with SEND, fostering a more inclusive and understanding community.
